Temple History
The temple's origins date back to the 11th century, with inscriptions from various dynasties including the Eastern Gangas, the Cholas, and the Gajapatis. Legend has it that the temple was built by Lord Vishnu himself, with the help of Garuda, to commemorate his Varaha and Narasimha avatars.
Temple Architecture
The temple showcases a blend of Kalinga, Chalukya, and Chola architectural styles:
- A 156-step stone stairway leads to the main temple
- The main shrine features intricate carvings and sculptures
- The Vimana (temple tower) is adorned with beautiful carvings
- Several mandapams including Kalyana Mandapam and Jagannatha Mandapam
- Unique 16-pillared Natya Mandapa with musical pillars
