Temple Description

The Lepakshi Veerabhadra Swamy Temple is renowned for its architectural brilliance and historical significance. It features some of the best mural paintings of the Vijayanagar Empire, covering an area of 24,000 square feet. The temple is famous for its hanging pillar, massive Nandi bull sculpture, and the largest monolithic Nagalinga in India.

Temple History

Built in 1530 AD by brothers Virupanna and Veeranna, who were governors under the Vijayanagar Empire, the temple is steeped in legend and history. According to local lore, this is where the bird Jatayu fell, wounded by Ravana, and Lord Rama commanded it to rise, uttering "Le Pakshi" (rise, bird), giving the place its name.

The temple is a stunning example of Vijayanagar architecture.
